IB Middle Years: Grades 6 - 8

International Baccalaureate® World School

The Mount Washington School is an International Baccalaureate® (IB) Middle Years Programme (MYP) World School. All students in Grades 6 – 8 participate.

The Middle Years Programme is the second of three programs in the International Baccalaureate continuum. The Mount Washington School follows the three-year model.

The goals of all the IB Programmes are to develop active, life-long learners: students who have the knowledge, abilities and skills to function independently and collaboratively, to be reflective and to take appropriate action.

IB CURRICULUM

The International Baccalaureate® (IB) MYP comprises eight subject groups:

  1. Language Acquisition

  2. Language and Literature

  3. Individuals and Societies

  4. Sciences

  5. Mathematics

  6. Arts

  7. Physical and Health Education

KEY COMPONENTS

Student schedules include at least 50 hours of instruction in each of their eight subject areas. All subjects are connected to each other through concepts and skills:

  • Global Contexts (placing learning in the world)

  • Key and Related Concepts (focusing in thematic ideas)

  • Approaches to Learning (interdisciplinary skills)

  • Learner Profile Traits (personal attributes)

COMMUNITY PROJECT

All students will culminate their IB MYP experience at MWS in Year Three by completing a community project which is designed to allow our students to demonstrate their ability to use the concepts and skills they have learned through self-directed research, action, and reflection. This project is introduced to students in Individuals and Societies, completed throughout the course of the year, and is supported by a school-based mentor.
