Back-to-School

Do MWS students wear uniforms?

No, MWS Students are not required to wear uniforms.

Can we see our classroom before school starts?

Yes! “Sneak-a-Peek” is an annual MWS tradition, providing students and their families an informal opportunity to see their classrooms and lockers. It is also a good opportunity to drop-off your student’s school supplies to help lighten the load for everyone on the first day of school.

When will teachers share information about the curriculum and class procedures?

Parents will have a chance to meet teachers and get information at Back-to-School night. Back-to-School night is an opportunity to learn and understand each program so that you can help your MWS student meet those expectations successfully.

Is Before / After Care available for students?

Yes. United Educational Corporation (UEC) operates a Before & After School Care Program for students in all grades. For more information, please visit the United Educational Corporation Website.

What is an Asynchronous Learning Day?

Asynchronous Learning is learning that occurs at home without real-time interaction or instruction by the teacher. Our teachers have prepared online assignments or work packets for students to complete. These Asynchronous Learning Days can be found on our School Calendar, along with Early Release Days and Professional Development Days.

Communication

How do we stay up-to-date with school news and information?

Parent volunteers and Administration strive to keep this website relevant and up-to-date.

We are utilizing the ParentSquare app to include events, newsletters and digests delivered straight to your email. Please ensure you are able to download it on to your home computer and your mobile device. Important informational flyers will also be sent home in your student’s take-home folders.

Follow MWS groups on social media:

What is the best way to communicate with the school?

We are now using ParentSquare as our primary form of communication from Teachers, Admin, PTO and SFCC groups. You may also view the Staff & Faculty Roster to find any needed contact information.

What is the PTO? What is the SFCC?

The PTO is the Parent Teacher Organization and leads our school’s fundraising efforts. Membership is exclusive to Parents, Guardians, Caregivers, and Faculty within the school who pay dues. The SFCC is the School Family and Community Council and welcomes members of the Mount Washington neighborhood outside of the school system to join them. Both of these groups are important and necessary in fundraising and advocating for both our school and community needs.

It is greatly encouraged for everyone to become active participants in both groups.

Lunch & Recess

Who supervises students during lunch and recess?

Adult supervision is available to assist with all lunch and recess procedures. However, we are always in need of volunteers and appreciate when we are able to receive help from our Parent, Guardian, and Caregiver Community.

Please consider becoming a Volunteer.

How much does lunch cost, and where can I find menus?

City Schools provides healthy breakfast and lunch options to all students for free.

Supper and snacks are also available at many sites to students participating in supervised school-based after-school activities. BCPS is committed to working with school leaders to ensure their operations meet our communities’ needs. School breakfast and lunch menus are available at the BCPS website.

Is the school peanut free?

No, the entire school is not peanut-free. There are certain classrooms and a table in the Lower Building cafeteria that is designated as peanut-free. Please read more about our SNACK GUIDELINES for our Pre-K through 3rd Grade students.

What are the procedures for the carpool line?

Lower Building - Cars should drop students off in the one-way loop.  Cars enter the grounds from Smith Avenue and follow the "loop" on the parking lot.  Adults will be stationed in front of the school building to assist students out of the car and direct them to Door B.  No parking is permitted on the lot.  Cars that disrupt the flow of traffic will be asked to move.   Lower Building Map

Upper Building - Cars should line up on the left curbside of Lochlea from South Road when dropping off or picking up students. The crossing guard will be on duty beginning at 8:05 am. Drivers may not leave their cars for any reason while in the carpool line. If a driver needs to come in the building, then the car must be parked in the lot or on Sulgrave.

If school has a delayed opening or early dismissal, will there still be bus service?

Yes, the yellow buses will transport students if school starts late or there is an early dismissal. Delayed openings and early dismissals are normally related to Inclement Weather. Parents, Guardians, and Caregivers should make arrangements and consider potential bus delays on days with delayed openings or early dismissals.
