Academics: Pre-K - 5

The Mount Washington School offers a full-day program for Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 5.

Every grade uses the Maryland State Curriculum, developed by the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE). This curriculum outlines the standards that students must meet in each subject.

This weekly instructional program includes an opportunity for students to participate in Music, Art, Physical Education, and Library.

Special Education is provided for students with learning needs. Classroom and special education teachers collaboratively plan instructional activities that address the specific goals and objectives on the Individual Education Plan (IEP) for each student receiving special education services. Parents and school staff meet annually to discuss student progress related to the IEP and make necessary adjustments to the goals and objectives.

Resource Classes

  • Elementary music classes establish the foundation of music learning. Students are involved in active music-making. They sing, play instruments, and move to music from various cultures.

  • Physical education provides cognitive
content and instruction designed to develop motor skills, knowledge, and behaviors for physical activity and physical fitness. Supporting schools to establish physical education daily can provide students with the ability and confidence to be physically active for a lifetime.

  • Students explore line, shape, color, texture, form, and other key concepts in developmentally appropriate ways. They learn key vocabulary, create art using these elements, and critically respond to art.

  • Our library provides instruction for students in selecting and using research materials and technology. We plan, organize, coordinate, oversee, and provide library services. Our school strives to develop a love of reading and books for all of our students.

GAL, ILPs, and 504 Plans

The MWS is proud to offer Gifted and Advanced Learning (GAL) services. Formal identification entitles students to Individualized Learning Plans (ILPs) but is not required to gain access to gifted learning resources at the school level. If your student has yet to be identified but may qualify, please click the button below to complete the survey.
